 Rapture Rupture
Back to Full Blog

In biblical parlance, the United States is an iniquitous country. Our citizenry is superficial, callous, ignorant, bellicose, greedy, selfish and oblivious to the very real horrors confronting humanity in today's world. Our collective attention rises merely to the banal plateau of shopping and entertainment. There is little or no national concern for what is occuring in Iraq, Darfur, the entire African sub-continent; barely even for the declining quality of life of the average citizen. Only recently have some of us given credence to the scientific community's inescapable conclusion that global warming is real.
In an era of unprecidented ability to transmit and receive information, Americans seem to epitomize the "monkey trilogy", see, hear, speak no evil. We have turned a blind eye to our own humanity and as a result, we can see no one else's humanity. George Bush is the perfect president for these times and these Americans. We, like him, have elevated incuriouness and unawareness to sacramental status.
It is unclear why so many of us are so "proud to be an American". Pride in what? Your SUV, you mortgaged home, your dyslexic, dysfunctional, self-centered children? Perhaps you're proud of our educational system that has plummeted to frightening depths. Do you take pride in an economy that more resembles feudal Europe than the promise of "rising boats" that gave hope to the generations in the post WWII boom? If your pride is merely predicated on the fact that you were born in America, you truly are mindless.
There is one shining source of pride in which one may bask as an American. Against all odds and a fascist regime, we still have the right and the obligation to question authority and express our dissent against the abuses of power. This last election illustrated the effectiveness of dissent. Take pride in your right of dissent and exercize it.
We are a culture in decline, but not because of abortion rights, women's rights, or gay rights. At our own peril we ignore human rights. If there were a god, she would be quite disappointed in us and probably more inclined to blast America than bless America. Ribet....ribet

Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. In return - I will give you my opinon and that is that there is diffently a God and I am sure He is disappointed with how we are handling things. We humans have always messed up his plans. We don't listen and we try to do it our way - always. There in lies the problem - when we follow God we get it right - when we follow man/mankind we screw it up - it is as simple as that. Thanks be to God that He is a loving God and continues to gives us His Grace and Mercy - for our shortcomings. That way we still have hope for the future in a better place than this hell we continue to make for ourselves.

Have a wonderful holiday and again - thanks for stopping by and please come back.

I agree with you that we ignore human rights in this country. I truly believe that if we took the time to think about why we were put here in the first place that we might be able to learn how to live more productive lives here in America where we really have no excuse except for our selfishness. Toadie, interesting post, I hopped over here after catching up on the comments on my blog (I usually have the last word there) and thought I'd see what your blog was like.

I tried not to and I guess I didn't but I almost had to laugh at the two comments before mine on this post. Stubborn, aren't they? And well meaning, I know. Still...

If people want to believe in this god thing, or even if they just want to claim to, I think they should hold themselves to a higher standard of behavior.

I will have to read some more here but not now. Bedtime. Thanks for visiting my spot, your comments are welcome anytime.

Toadie

I am confused by Dave's line of argument (see above). Are you a typical liberal communist or a communist liberal? Which way round are you? He seems to be suggesting that you are muddled-up...

Or perhaps he is a Commie 'plant', trying to confirm your thesis that many American's are, 'superficial, callous, ignorant, bellicose, greedy, selfish and oblivious'. Then again, perhaps Dave is a sophisticated post-modernist, with more than a twist of irony.

Keep on croaking!

Debunkem, I,too, am a tad confused. All along I thought I was a communal liberalist! But thanks to Dave's crisp, incisive commentary and that brief, yet poignant history of the Bolshevik Revolution, my post finally has an historical perspective.
He does present a knotty conundrum, that commie-liberal, liberal-commie thing which does give credence to your thesis indicating a degree of post-modern sophistication.
"La commedia e stupenda!!"
Cheers, Toadie

Boy you are on drugs. The United States of America is being judged by God for her sins. Nothing you can do about it stupid. The American people aren't any more terrible as all the other people around the world. I know I've been there. So stop being stupid, and turn your life over to Jesus Christ.

I would no more consider giving my life over to jesus than I would consider voting for Bush. Many of you "born agains" forgot an important component in your new incarnation, a brain capable of critical thought.
In addition to voter fraud, you religious goons, while giving your lives to jesus, also gave your asses to satan in the guise of the Bush administration. You, personally are a glowing example of the American Taliban. If America is being punished, as you so sanctimoniously proclaim, it is not by any god but as a result of a glut of bimbos like yourself who choose mythology and superficial emotion to guide you through life.
To paraphrase Shakespeare, a far more admirable source than Isaiah,...religion is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound a fury, signifying nothing!!
By the way, "HE" is not returning because "HE" was never here in the first place.

"George Bush is the perfect president for these times and these Americans."

At least for those Americans of the right-wing persuasion. That is why they love him so, in spite of the evil he has brought into the world.

Guy,
There are thousands more out there who share my passion and opinions. I wish they were more vocal and not so timid. The only way to counter these pigs is to expose them for the charlatans and frauds they are. Thanks for dropping by.
P.S. "Go get 'em girl" is much appreciated but as a male, I'm not sure what to make of it. Cheers, Toadie

It has been said that in a democracy the people get what they deserve. Bush's presidency does not speak well for this current crop of Americans.

Toadie -- I think Isaiah14 is confused. Does it want you to stop being stupid or give your life to jesus? Kind of like saying, stop doing drugs...... start taking paxil. Keep slaying the ignorant. Salud.

Whit,
How correct you are. I have great concern for the future as I look to a disengaged and apathetic youth. It is not totally their fault. There has been a focused gutting of our educatioal system to acheive the results we have now, a disengaged and apathetic youth. When I was young, we were vocal. Video games and cell phones have replaced inquiring minds. It looks bleak. Best wishes, Toadie

TOADIE: HELLO. You had ME at 'iniquitous'! WINK.

I'd have to AGREE with your assessment of PEOPLES these days. From MANY walks and views of life. Methinks no ONE segment can lay major claim to your assertations, my friend.

Keep on keepin' on,

NOW: For some 'lighter' fare:

(1) I see on the Weather Channel your area will see a COLD WAVE come through and you'll ONLY get up to the 80's??? GRINS.

(2) Those HURRYIN' HOOSIERS Roundballers are about to RUN & DUNK. Hope they can SHOOT and play DEFENSE, too! (SMILE)

My best to you and yours,

Thanks for dropping by and expressing your interest in the blog. I have been remiss in posting these past several months. There are yet thousands more dragons to slay and I need to cull the beasts. I shall return filled with piss and vinegar brandishing the Sword of Truth. Heigh-ho and cheerio!! Best wishes, Toadie.

Just a quick follow up and point of clarification. How do you talk sense to someone that has obviously given their mind over to dream? Or...How does anyone hear that has obviously given their mind over to a dream?.. Pop'

PoP,
Thanks for dropping by. Your point of clarification is most relevant. It is impossible to reason with someone who clings to notions and beliefs that are at their core, unreasonable. Such individuals are barely in the "here and now" and only offer preconceived responses to urgent and contemporary situations that require careful thought and consideration. Those who believe that a god is controlling everything and that this entity has their paltry concerns in its keep are, at best, demented and at worst, terrorists. All radical believers are potential terrorists.

Yes, human rights should have priority over all the others. Thank you for this thoughtful and well-written post.

Whit, Thanks for your comments. In order to address human rights, we as a culture must recognize our humanity, nourish our humanity and encourage its evolution. There is far too much blather about gods and their alleged importance to humanity and far too little focus on our common experience of existence.

TOADIE: HELLO & WELL said!

I hope you and yours had a GREAT holiday season. May you have GOOD HEALTH this 2008.

Well, those HOOSIERS footballers played a decent SECOND half but forgot to show up the FIRST half. SIGH. Still, all in all, a MUCH better season. Hope it continues from here on.

As for those BASKETBALLERS: IF they can KEEP the team together (grades, rules violations, etc.) and HEALTHY, methinks they can make ALOT of NOISE this year!!

My BEST, always ....

More than a few inches short of a DUNK, yours ----
